I've been a dog lover for as long as I can remember. But when it came to buying a comfortable, sustainable and washable bed for my furry friends, I faced the same frustrations time and again—dog beds that were costly, hard to keep clean, and ultimately destined for the landfill.

The turning point came when my stepdaughter asked for dog beds as a housewarming gift. I knew she'd soon experience the same issues, but I went ahead and bought her two high-priced, hard-to-wash beds. As her dogs nestled in, I had an “ah-ha” moment: Why not take something as cozy and easy to care for as the pillows on my own bed and transform it into a bed for dogs?
